Explanation:If you are aware about the PVST that for every VLAN, spanning tree is calculated. This individual spanning tree definitely helps in doing load sharing but it has a major drawback that it adds to the overhead on the box. In order to overcome this, there is something called Multiple Spanning tree. This was initially started by Cisco and was called Multiple Instance Spanning Tree Protocol. So let’s take an example that we are running 40 VLANs on a switch. If we are running 40 VLANs then it is quite evident that we are running 40 instances of STP as well. As mentioned above these 40 instances of STP are going to create overhead on the box and MST need to be used to overcome this issue. In MST, we allow several VLANs to be grouped together to create a single instance of STP. This in turn helps in reducing the number of spanning tree instances (processing overhead). Taking example from the above example where we had 40 VLANs on a switch, let’s group it into 2 different MST instances i.e. MST 1 and MST2 as mentioned in the question. If we group VLAN 1 to VLAN 20 in one STP instance called MST1 and group VLAN 21 to VLAN 40 in another STP instance called MST2. i.e. we have following setup:
VLAN 1 to VLAN 20 => MST1
VLAN 21 to VLAN 40 => MST2
Please keep in mind that as soon as you enable MST on a switch, it is going to create a common spanning tree (CST).
In case we have any other VLANs existing on the switch apart from the 40 mentioned above or any future VLAN that we are going to create on the switch then those VLANs will be part of the default instance (MST0).
So now on the switch we are running 2 instances of MST i.e. MST1 & MST 2 and there also exist a default MST or MST0 running on the switch. Keeping all three in mind the answer to the question is that 3 MST instances will be running if there are two different instances running on a switch.

The Cisco 300-115 exam is the second of three tests that an individual should pass in order to obtain the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) Routing and Switching and Cisco Certified Design Professional (CCDP) credentials.
The Cisco 300-115 SWITCH exam is made up of 30-40 questions. The multiple-choice questions require you to give multiple answers. There are also scenario-based questions, fill-in-the-blank, and drag and drop. The duration of the test is 120 minutes. It is available in English and Japanese. Currently, there is no passing score that has been published by Cisco.
